A new wave of promotions will sweep through the Otun Olubadan line on Friday as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, prepares to elevate nine chiefs across various traditional ranks—from Jagun to Ayingun.

The ceremony marks another significant step in the ongoing reorganisation and strengthening of the Ibadan chieftaincy structure under Oba Ladoja’s reign.

The event, which is expected to attract members of the Olubadan-in-Council, will take place at the historic Oke-Aremo Palace in Ibadan, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Prominent Figures Among Those to Be Elevated

Among the chiefs slated for elevation is Ibadan-based lawyer and elder brother to the Oyo State Governor, Chief Olumuyiwa Makinde, who will rise from Aare Onibon to Gbonka Olubadan. His elevation underscores both his service within the traditional structure and the continued involvement of reputable professionals in Ibadan’s cultural leadership.

Also on the list is renowned engineer and influential business mogul, Chief Dotun Sanusi, who will be promoted from Ajia to Bada Olubadan. Sanusi is widely respected for his contributions to community development and investment within Oyo State.

Full List of Chiefs Scheduled for Elevation

According to a statement issued by the Olubadan’s media aide, Chief Adeola Oloko, the following chiefs will also be elevated:

  • Chief Dauda Kolawole Gbadamosi — from Aare Ago to Ayingun Olubadan

  • Chief William Oyeleke Akande — from Lagunna to Aare Ago Olubadan

  • Chief Oluyinka Akande — from Oota to Lagunna Olubadan

  • Chief Olufemi Taofeek Ogunwale — from Aare-Egbe Omo to Oota Olubadan

  • Chief Wasiu Aderoju Alaadorin — from Gbonka to Aare-Egbe Omo Olubadan

  • Chief Abiola Iyiola Anlamole — from Bada to Aare Onibon Olubadan

This brings the total number of chiefs being elevated to nine, all within the Otun Olubadan line, which plays a foundational role in the succession hierarchy of Ibadanland.

A Significant Cultural Moment for Ibadanland

Friday’s ceremony is expected to draw dignitaries, traditional leaders, and community members who regard such promotions as not only an honour for the individuals but also a reinforcement of Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage.

The elevation exercise also reflects Oba Ladoja’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and orderly progression of the chieftaincy system. By advancing chiefs across ranks, the Olubadan ensures continuity, seniority alignment, and effective participation in traditional governance.

Looking Ahead

As Ibadan continues to balance modern governance with traditional leadership, the elevation of these nine chiefs is expected to strengthen the Otun line and expand the pool of experienced leaders contributing to the city’s cultural and civic life.
