Ondo Mourns As Former SDP Governorship Candidate Akingboye Passes Away At 60.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the people of Ondo State are grieving the loss of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, the party’s governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024, election, who passed away at the age of 60. Akingboye, fondly known as OBA, died in the early hours of Wednesday, 3 September 2025, at his residence in Victoria Garden City, Lagos, as confirmed by his Personal Assistant and Media Adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun.
Akingboye, a distinguished businessman and philanthropist, was the Chief Executive Officer of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems and President of WeAfrica Group. He also held the revered traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland, reflecting his deep-rooted connection to his community in Okitipupa, Ondo South. His campaign for the 2024 governorship election inspired many with a vision of good governance, social justice, and sustainable development for Ondo State. “He was a man of unwavering integrity, an accomplished businessman, philanthropist, visionary leader, and community builder who lived a fulfilled and purposeful life,” Iwakun stated, capturing the essence of Akingboye’s legacy.
Born on 2 April 1964, Akingboye brought over 40 years of entrepreneurial experience to his political ambitions, having previously contested for governor under the Peoples Democratic Party in 2003 and the Democratic Peoples Party. His 2024 campaign gained significant traction, earning endorsements from prominent traditional rulers, including the Oba of Isuada, Iyere, Idasin, Epe, and Mahin, for his commitment to unity and progress. As a UN Peace Ambassador and member of the Greater Houston Chamber of Commerce and Petroleum Club in Texas, USA, Akingboye’s global influence underscored his dedication to societal development.
The SDP in Ondo State expressed profound sorrow, describing Akingboye as a remarkable leader whose passion for service left an indelible mark. “His leadership inspired many, and his legacy will continue to shape the future of our state,” said SDP Chairman Ebenezer Akinbuli. The party extended heartfelt condolences to Akingboye’s wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings, who have requested privacy during this period of grief. Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
