The Ondo State Government has officially confirmed two cases of cholera in Okitipupa Local Government Area, prompting the activation of immediate response measures.
Banji Ajaka, the State Commissioner for Health, announced that the situation has been swiftly contained by a rapid response team.
In a proactive move, the state has bolstered its surveillance efforts to prevent any potential outbreak. Ajaka revealed that community informants and contact tracers have been trained and deployed for active case searches. These personnel will be on stipends for eight months to ensure consistent monitoring.
“We’ve strengthened our surveillance team with trained community informants and contact tracers,” Ajaka stated. “They’re now actively searching for any potential cholera cases across the state.”
The commissioner also announced plans to establish an emergency preparedness committee. This committee will focus on crucial areas such as providing potable water, improving sanitation, and reinforcing health institutions throughout the state.
Emphasising the government’s commitment to public health, Ajaka assured residents that extensive awareness campaigns would be conducted. These efforts will include mass media sensitization and community engagement initiatives to educate the public about cholera prevention and control measures.
While the two reported cases have been effectively managed, the state government remains vigilant. The swift response and comprehensive preparedness measures underscore Ondo State’s determination to prevent any widespread outbreak of cholera.
As the situation develops, health officials urge residents to maintain good hygiene practices and report any suspected cases promptly to the nearest health facility.
