Opposition Coalition Seeks 2027 Presidential Candidate As APC Derides Efforts

Opposition Coalition Seeks 2027 Presidential Candidate As APC Derides Efforts.

A broad-based opposition coalition, spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, is reportedly considering former Transportation Minister Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi as its potential standard-bearer for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

Insiders revealed that Amaechi, who turned 60 on 27 May, emerged as a leading contender after Obi insisted on running again with his former running mate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed. The coalition, aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is grappling with internal dynamics to select a unifying candidate.

At a recent anniversary lecture themed “Weaponising Hunger,” held in Amaechi’s honour, the former Rivers State governor revealed he had informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, shortly after Tinubu’s selection as APC’s candidate, that he would not support his re-election. Amaechi cited concerns over Tinubu’s ability to unify Nigeria, telling attendees, “The last two years have vindicated my stance.”

A coalition steering committee member, speaking anonymously to The Guardian, described the lecture as a strategic move to test public support for Amaechi’s potential 2027 bid. The event, attended by politicians, business leaders, clergy, and close associates, was deliberately exclusive due to its political undertones. “It was a way to gauge interest in his presidential run,” the source noted.

However, the coalition faces hurdles in aligning its key figures. While efforts persist to convince Atiku Abubakar to forgo another presidential bid, Obi remains steadfast in his plan to contest with Baba-Ahmed as his deputy. “We’re still seeking commitments, but Obi’s position is unwavering,” the source added.

The APC, meanwhile, has ridiculed the opposition’s efforts, labelling their candidate search as evidence of disunity. Party spokespersons claim these internal rifts will weaken the coalition’s prospects in 2027.

As Nigeria’s political scene intensifies ahead of the next election cycle, the opposition coalition’s ability to rally behind a single candidate will be crucial in its bid to challenge the ruling party.
