Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to the 2027 presidential election has sparked debate, with Senator Adams Oshiomhole advising him against it.
According to Oshiomhole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) would easily defeat Jonathan, making it an unnecessary risk.
Oshiomhole stated that Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat in 2015 earned him global admiration and respect. “How can Jonathan be a threat? We defeated him before when PDP was truly PDP. If a man had PDP at its best, at its peak, and he was defeated, I think only his enemy will push him to go into election,” Oshiomhole said.
The APC is confident of defeating Jonathan due to the weakened state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-South region. Oshiomhole added that the party would “defeat him flatly” if he decides to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Oshiomhole praised Jonathan’s concession speech, describing it as one of his most admirable legacies. He urged Jonathan to maintain his status as a respected statesman and avoid a return to politics.
Some stakeholders, including Abdul Azeez Adediran, the 2023 governorship candidate of the PDP, have also advised Jonathan not to contest the 2027 election, citing his age and the need to preserve his legacy.
Jonathan’s potential return to politics has generated mixed reactions, with Oshiomhole’s comments highlighting the challenges he may face if he decides to run.
