The Osun Amotekun Commander, Adekunle Omoyele, has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after being ambushed by gunmen in Osogbo on Monday night.
The incident occurred at about 10:05 p.m. on Ikirun Road, opposite Charity Hotel, Osogbo, where Omoyele’s vehicle was riddled with bullets.
Omoyele was driving home alone after official work when the gunmen opened fire on him. He sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility under protective watch. According to the spokesperson for the Amotekun Corps, Abass Yusuf, the commander’s condition is said to be stable.
“It is deeply troubling that Amotekun commander could be targeted in such a coordinated and vicious manner,” Yusuf said. The Amotekun Corps has urged citizens to remain calm and report any suspicious activities to local security agencies for prompt responses and actions.
The attack is viewed as not just an attack on one man but on the symbol of localized security structure. “The attack is not just an attack on one man but on the symbol of our localized security structure,” Yusuf emphasized.
In a related incident, 15 unidentified armed men, reportedly in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV, stormed Omoyele’s private residence. The attackers were said to have banged on the gates, shouting “open the gates,” before fleeing upon the arrival of neighbors.
The case has been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, and investigations are ongoing. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motive remains unclear. The police are working to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
