The Osun State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria has expressed disappointment with the attitude of the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Adepele Ojo, towards the ongoing strike.
JUSUN Chairman, Idris Adeniyan, criticized the Chief Judge’s response to the strike, saying her abrupt departure from the state on the day the strike commenced without any effort to resolve the issue is discouraging.
The strike, which has entered its third week, was triggered by the union’s demands for promotions for staff members for 2024 and 2025, as well as access to capacity-building programs at the National Judicial Institute. Adeniyan commended the union members for their total compliance with the strike, saying, “Her lordship’s abrupt departure from the state on the day the strike commenced without any step to resolve the issue is not encouraging.”
The union has scheduled a meeting with the Nigerian Bar Association in Osun State to resolve the issue. Adeniyan stated that the meeting would discuss possible resolutions to the ongoing industrial action. “The union had scheduled a meeting for Friday with the Nigerian Bar Association in the state to resolve the issue,” he said.
The strike has disrupted judicial activities in Osun State, with many litigants and legal practitioners affected. The union has warned that unauthorized withdrawals from judiciary accounts would not be tolerated and has suspended all financial transactions except for judges’ salaries for September.
Adeniyan urged the Chief Judge to find a lasting solution to the issues surrounding the industrial action, which has entered its third week. “The union is dissatisfied with the ongoing strike, without any resolution in sight by the chief judge,” he said.
The union has expressed its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of judiciary staff, urging members to remain resolute and united in their demands. As the strike continues, the outcome of the meeting with the NBA will be closely watched.
