Oyo State Police Debunk False Boko Haram Invasion Video.
The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed a viral video claiming a Boko Haram invasion of Oyo Town as misleading and outdated, urging residents to remain calm and vigilant.
In a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer CSP Osifeso Adewale on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the command clarified that the video, which allegedly shows trucks carrying motorcycles and weapons along the Ibadan Express Road, is recycled footage from 2022. The police described the circulation of the clip as a deliberate attempt by “mischief makers” to spread falsehoods and incite fear among the public.
“The re-emergence of this video, particularly during a period of enhanced security, suggests a malicious intent to disrupt peace,” the statement read. The police further noted that DSP Segun Adeyemo, a retired Divisional Crime Officer who briefly appeared in the video, left the Nigeria Police Force in August 2024, confirming the footage’s outdated nature.
The command reassured residents of its commitment to ensuring safety and security across Oyo State. It urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified content on social media, which could cause unnecessary alarm and disrupt social order. “We kindly request that citizens verify information through credible sources before dissemination,” the statement added.
Residents have been encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities and to adopt a cautious approach when encountering online content. “Together, we can uphold the safety and security of our community,” the police concluded.
