Palm Springs Fertility Clinic Rocked By Deadly Bomb Blast Labelled ‘Act Of Terrorism’

Palm Springs Fertility Clinic Rocked By Deadly Bomb Blast Labelled ‘Act Of Terrorism’.

A devastating bomb explosion outside the American Reproductive Centers (ARC) fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, has left one person dead and four others injured, in what the FBI has branded an “intentional act of terrorism.” The blast, which occurred just before 11:00 local time (19:00 BST) on Saturday, sent shockwaves through the upscale desert city, damaging buildings and shattering windows across several blocks.

The explosion, centred in or near a vehicle in the clinic’s car park, tore through the area less than a mile from downtown Palm Springs. Witnesses described a scene of chaos and destruction. Michael Beaumier, knocked off his bike by the force, told the BBC: “It was that big of an explosion, and I could hear windows shattering all around me.” Rhino Williams, a local restaurant manager, initially mistook the blast for a plane or helicopter crash. Rushing to the scene, he found a severely damaged building with walls blown out and a car’s front axle ablaze. “That’s all that was left of it,” he said, noting an iPhone on a tripod, seemingly set to record or livestream the incident, still standing amidst the wreckage.

Nima Tabrizi, another witness, described a “big boom” followed by a large cloud of smoke, with the clinic’s frontage “completely blown out.” Williams searched the building for survivors but found none before first responders arrived minutes later.

The FBI, leading the investigation, confirmed the attack was deliberate. “This was an intentional act of terrorism,” said Akil Davis, head of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, during a Saturday briefing. “As our investigation unfolds, we will determine if it’s international or domestic terrorism.” The agency has identified a “person of interest” but is not actively searching for a suspect, suggesting the deceased may be linked to the attack, though the individual’s identity remains undisclosed.

Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills described the explosion as “one of the largest bombing investigations in Southern California,” with debris scattered over 250 yards. While the ARC’s office space was damaged, Dr Maher Abdallah, who runs the clinic, confirmed that no staff or patients were harmed, as the facility was closed. “Thank God today happened to be a day that we had no patients,” he told the Associated Press. The clinic’s IVF lab, housing eggs and embryos, remained “fully secure and undamaged,” and a safety inspection is underway to ensure operations resume on Monday.

The ARC, Coachella Valley’s first full-service fertility centre since 2006, offers services including IVF, egg donation, and reproductive support for same-sex couples and surrogacy. Its commitment to “creating hope” was reaffirmed in a statement, expressing condolences to those affected and gratitude to emergency responders.

Palm Springs Mayor Ron De Harte confirmed the bomb was in or near a vehicle, while California Governor Gavin Newsom pledged state support for the investigation. US Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the attack, stating on X: “Violence against a fertility clinic is unforgivable. The Trump administration understands that women and mothers are the heartbeat of America.”

As the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, alongside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, combs through the scene, questions linger about the motive. Social media posts noted a tripod-mounted camera, hinting at a possible livestream attempt, though authorities have yet to confirm this. For now, Palm Springs, known for its resorts and vibrant community, grapples with the aftermath of an attack that Police Chief Mills called an “isolated incident” but one that tested the city’s resilience. “Terrorism came knocking on our door,” he said. “We survived, and this city will rise.”
