Paris 2024: Quadri Aruna Exits Men’s Singles Table Tennis in Round of 64.
Quadri Aruna, competing in his fourth consecutive Olympic Games, was eliminated in the round of 64 in the men’s singles table tennis event by Romania’s Eduard Ionescu in a dramatic comeback match that ended 4-3 at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Aruna started strong, dominating the first three sets with scores of 11-8, 11-9, and 11-6. His performance hinted at a potential clean sweep. However, the 19-year-old Ionescu halted Aruna’s momentum, winning the fourth set 11-8. This led to a tightly contested fifth set where the Romanian edged out Aruna 12-10, forcing a sixth set.
Ionescu maintained his momentum, winning the sixth set 11-9 and tying the match at 3-3. The final set was a nail-biter, with both players fighting fiercely. Ultimately, it was Ionescu who emerged victorious, clinching the set 13-11 and causing an upset for Aruna.
This was not the first time the two players had faced off. Their initial encounter was at the 2024 European Champions League in March, where Ionescu also triumphed with a 3-2 victory.
Aruna is well-known for his historic achievement at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where he became the first African to reach the quarterfinals in table tennis. His performance at Paris 2024, despite the early exit, continues to reflect his high calibre as a player on the global stage.
