The year witnessed significant fluctuations in passport power, with some nations soaring to unexpected heights while others faced challenges in maintaining their positions.
According to the VisaGuide Passport Ranking Index, Spain emerged as the frontrunner in January 2024, seizing the title of the world’s most powerful passport, with Germany and Singapore following closely in second and third positions, respectively. Lum Kamishi, Project Manager at VisaGuide.World, highlights the contrasting trajectories of passport power observed in 2023.
In January 2023, Singapore claimed the top spot on the passport power table but has since slipped to third place. Kamishi attributes this decline to Singapore’s insufficient efforts to retain its leading position.
The ranking reveals significant shifts among the top 25 passports, with Portugal and Malta experiencing the most substantial drops, plummeting nine positions each. Conversely, France, the Netherlands, and Finland made remarkable strides, climbing 14, 12, and six positions, respectively.
Notably, Kosovo witnessed an unprecedented leap in passport power, ascending 88 positions overnight, following the EU Council’s approval of visa-free entry for its citizens in 2024. Besart Bajrami, founder of VisaGuide.World, describes Kosovo’s ascent as historic but notes its continued disparity compared to other Western Balkan nations.
Yemen also made significant progress, advancing from the 196th to the 176th position in the index, marking a notable positive change.
