PDP Suspends Aspirants’ Screening As Uncertainty Looms Over Ibadan Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention, originally scheduled for October 28.

The National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC), chaired by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, announced the suspension, citing unforeseen circumstances. The new date for the screening will be communicated in due course.

This development has sparked concerns about the convention’s viability, which is set to hold on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State. The party faces several challenges, including ongoing court injunctions, internal factional disputes, and allegations of procedural irregularities that could derail the process. A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued orders directing parties to “maintain the status quo,” temporarily restraining the party from moving forward with convention preparations.

The credibility of the delegate list remains uncertain, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to give full clearance. These uncertainties raise questions about the legitimacy and smooth conduct of the convention if the issues are not resolved promptly.

Tensions are intensifying in the South-East zone, where lawmakers have threatened to boycott the convention if the position of National Woman Leader is not retained within the region, specifically Imo State. They argue that the defection of Enugu’s Governor Peter Mbah to the APC has nullified previous arrangements, and shifting the position to the South-South would be divisive and unfair.

Party leaders are now under pressure to address these internal conflicts swiftly. The PDP must find common ground among its factions to ensure the convention proceeds smoothly and maintains the party’s unity. Any delay or controversy could significantly undermine the party’s future prospects and its ability to present a united front.

Observers note that the upcoming convention is a crucial moment for the PDP to resolve leadership disputes and elect a new National Working Committee (NWC). How the party navigates these challenges will be closely watched by political analysts and party supporters alike.
