PDP Urges Senate To Ensure Credible INEC Leadership

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Nigerian Senate to carefully vet the nomination of Amupitan for the position of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The party emphasized that Nigerians deserve an electoral commission that is transparent, fair, and capable of conducting credible elections.

PDP spokesperson Ologunagba reminded the public that the nomination by the President through the Council of State is only the first step in the confirmation process. He stressed that the Senate must conduct thorough hearings to assess Amupitan’s qualifications and integrity before approving the appointment.

The party warned against rushing the confirmation process, noting that hasty approval could undermine public confidence in INEC and the democratic process. PDP emphasized that the integrity of the electoral body is crucial for the stability of Nigeria’s democracy.

PDP also highlighted the importance of ensuring that INEC leadership is independent and free from political interference. The party argued that credible elections are foundational to the nation’s progress and that any leader appointed must uphold these principles.

In addition, the party urged all stakeholders, including civil society organizations and political parties, to engage constructively in the confirmation process. PDP believes that public scrutiny is essential to holding nominees accountable and safeguarding electoral integrity.

The party concluded by reaffirming its commitment to Nigeria’s democratic process and called on the Senate to prioritize the interests of Nigerians over political expediency in confirming the INEC Chairman.
