In a concerted effort to sustain progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS, Ambassador Dr. John Nkengasong, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Senior Bureau Official for Global Health Security and Diplomacy, announces the launch of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Nursing Leadership Initiative

The initiative aims to bolster the capacity of nurses leading the charge against HIV/AIDS in Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Eswatini, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia.

With an allocation of $8 million for the year 2024, PEPFAR’s Nursing Leadership Initiative focuses on empowering nurses with the skills and resources necessary to drive the delivery of HIV/AIDS services, thus advancing the goal of ending the epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.

Key objectives of the initiative include:

– Enhancing nurses’ capabilities in planning and administering HIV/AIDS services to mitigate disruptions in access to essential care.

– Facilitating the adoption of innovative digital solutions to enhance the quality of HIV service delivery.

– Ensuring the safety and well-being of nurses through improved infection prevention and control measures, supportive work environments, and addressing mental health needs.

– Investing in the development, retention, and equitable distribution of the nursing workforce, in alignment with each country’s national priorities, to ensure the sustainability of HIV service delivery.

– Strengthening nurses’ communication and leadership skills to effectively lead and advocate for HIV/AIDS initiatives within their communities.

PEPFAR implementing partners will collaborate with nursing organizations in the seven targeted countries to conduct comprehensive needs assessments, guiding the implementation of tailored activities under the initiative.

This initiative stresses PEPFAR’s commitment to empowering frontline healthcare workers and fortifying the global response to HIV/AIDS in Africa, marking a significant step towards achieving the ambitious goal of ending the epidemic by 2030.
