Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has strongly criticized the ongoing demolition of private properties by government agencies across Nigeria.
He described these actions as unjust and detrimental to the welfare of citizens.
In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi expressed his condemnation of the demolitions, particularly those carried out without prior notice to the affected property owners.
“I like to reiterate my strong condemnation of the willful destruction of people’s property and goods by governments at any level without notice,” Obi stated.
He emphasized that such actions are unacceptable, especially considering the economic hardships many Nigerians are facing.
“An administration whose policies and style have sent several million Nigerians into poverty in 29 months should show compassion for its citizens,” Obi remarked.
Obi highlighted the negative impact of these demolitions on businesses and livelihoods, noting that many affected properties contained goods worth billions of naira.
“These demolitions destroy livelihoods, undermine businesses, and threaten the economic security of hardworking citizens,” he observed.
He questioned the legal and moral justification for such actions, urging the government to ensure that urban development policies respect the rights and dignity of citizens.
“Citizens deserve protection for their investments, livelihoods, and dignity,” Obi asserted.
Obi concluded by warning that continued disregard for citizens’ rights could undermine the nation’s economic growth and social stability.
“Every citizen has the right to build a life through honest work, and that right must never be trampled,” he declared.
