Police Foil Assassination Attempt On Ondo Monarch

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested 10 suspects over a violent attack on the Igoba community in Akure North Local Government Area, where gunmen allegedly attempted to assassinate the traditional ruler, Oba Adinlewa John.

The incident occurred on October 2, 2025, when hoodlums armed with guns, knives, and charms invaded the community, injuring a resident, Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo, and dispossessing her of her belongings.

The suspects, armed with firearms, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons, stormed the community around 11:30 a.m. with the intent to wreak havoc. They attempted to kill Oba Adinlewa John at his palace, but the monarch narrowly escaped the life-threatening assault.

The police commissioner, Adebowale Lawal, deployed tactical teams led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, which led to the arrest of the 10 suspects. “The suspects have confessed to their roles in the unrest and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations,” the police spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, said.

Items recovered from the suspects include two locally fabricated pistols, a single-barrel gun, live ammunition, charms, knives, machetes, and other weapons used during the incident. The injured victim is receiving treatment and responding well, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.

The police have warned that Ondo State will not be a haven for criminals and anyone who dares to test the resolve of security agencies will face the full weight of the law. “Normalcy has since been restored to Igoba community, with security presence reinforced to forestall further breakdown of law and order,” the police said.

The police commissioner assured the public of the command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to go about their lawful businesses without fear.
