Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has presented insurance cheques worth over ₦21.17 billion to 1,574 beneficiaries and next of kin of police officers who died in active service between 2015 and 2025.

The ceremony, which marks the 11th phase of this welfare exercise, aims to provide financial relief to the families of fallen officers.

According to Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force has disbursed a cumulative sum of ₦24.2 billion to 9,735 families of deceased officers since he assumed office. “This is more than a statutory duty, it is a symbol of trust. A trust to ensure that the memory of our departed officers remains alive and their families, not left behind,” he said.

The cheques were presented as part of the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme, designed to provide support to the families of deceased officers. Egbetokun emphasized that the welfare of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force remains a cardinal priority of his administration. “Welfare is not a footnote in our agenda, it is a heartbeat of our efforts,” he stated.

The IGP expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing police welfare and ensuring the timely release of premium for the Insurance Scheme. He also commended the Force Insurance Unit and collaborating insurance companies for their tireless efforts in ensuring prompt settlement of claims. “No compensation can truly replace a lost life,” Egbetokun noted.

The Nigeria Police Force is working to digitize its insurance processes, ensuring that entitlements flow without delay and that no family of a deceased officer is left unattended. The Force has successfully disbursed benefits to thousands of beneficiaries in several phases, amounting to billions of naira.

The beneficiaries expressed their appreciation to the IGP for remembering them and prayed God Almighty to bless him so that he will continue to fight for the rights of police officers. The ceremony reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to honouring the legacies of its fallen heroes and supporting their loved ones.
