Powerful Earthquake Strikes Vanuatu, Triggering Widespread Destruction

Powerful Earthquake Strikes Vanuatu, Triggering Widespread Destruction.

A devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake has struck near Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, causing landslides, crushing vehicles, and flattening multiple buildings, including a complex housing several Western embassies. The full extent of the damage remains unclear as power and mobile networks across the country are down.

Early reports suggest casualties, with Dan McGarry, a journalist based in Port Vila, confirming at least one death as reported by hospital authorities. He described seeing “several people who were visibly, seriously injured” outside the emergency unit at Vila Central Hospital. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue.

Michael Thompson, director of the Vanuatu Jungle Zipline adventure company, described scenes of devastation, stating that bodies were seen lying in the streets and emergency efforts were underway to rescue individuals trapped under rubble.

“We often have earthquakes here, but not like this,” said Amanda Thompson, who described her home as severely damaged, with giant cracks and shattered glass doors. “We are feeling a lot of aftershocks now, and each one makes us nervous as we run out into the open air.”

Footage shared by state broadcaster VBTC showed dozens of people outside the Vila Central Hospital, many awaiting treatment on hospital gurneys. Residents are grappling with the aftermath, as emergency services face significant challenges due to limited resources and equipment.

Dan McGarry noted that while Vanuatu is accustomed to natural disasters, this earthquake felt like “the biggest one in more than 20 years.” However, he expressed resilience, saying, “We’ll get through this as well, although not without some suffering.”

Vanuatu, an archipelago of around 80 islands in the South Pacific, is highly seismically active and experiences frequent earthquakes and natural disasters. The country, located west of Fiji and east of northern Australia, has been bracing for such events for decades, but this latest disaster underscores the vulnerability of its communities.

As rescue operations continue and aftershocks persist, the people of Vanuatu are once again displaying their resilience in the face of adversity.
