Arsenal Triumph Despite Controversial Lewis-Skelly Red Card.

Arsenal edged past Wolves 1-0 to maintain their Premier League title hopes, but the focus of the match was 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card in the 43rd minute, a decision that left fans, pundits, and manager Mikel Arteta fuming.

Lewis-Skelly was shown a straight red card by referee Michael Oliver after a challenge on Wolves’ Matt Doherty, 70 yards from Arsenal’s goal, as he attempted to break up a counter-attack. The decision, upheld by VAR, has been widely criticised as one of the most contentious moments of the season.

 Arteta “Fuming” Over Decision

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Arteta expressed his frustration: “It is so obvious that today you don’t need my words. I am absolutely fuming, but I leave it with you.”

The Arsenal boss suggested the club might appeal the red card, although he added: “It’s that obvious, maybe we don’t even need to.”

Unless overturned, the ban means Lewis-Skelly will miss Arsenal’s critical fixtures against Manchester City and Leicester in the Premier League, as well as the Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle United.

 Opinions Among Pundits

The decision has sparked widespread debate among football pundits. Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer described it as “one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in a long time.” He argued the tackle lacked speed, intensity, or danger and suggested it warranted only a yellow card.

Others, like Pat Nevin, were baffled. “It doesn’t look like violent conduct. It’s a cynical trip. I have never seen that in my life,” he remarked.

Despite being down to 10 men for the entire second half, Arsenal managed to secure victory thanks to a 74th-minute goal from substitute Riccardo Calafiori. Wolves themselves went down to 10 men late in the match after Joao Gomes received a second yellow card.

Calafiori praised the team’s resilience, saying: “It was a tough moment for Myles, but we rallied as a team. From the bench, it was clearly not a red card.”

At 18 years and 121 days, Lewis-Skelly is now the third youngest player to receive a Premier League red card, following Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen. As Arsenal await the outcome of any potential appeal, the decision has once again highlighted ongoing debates surrounding VAR and refereeing standards in the league.

The result leaves Arsenal within six points of league leaders Liverpool as they continue to fight for the Premier League title.
