Premier League Welcomes Back Familiar Faces and an Unfamiliar Challenger.
As the new Premier League season kicks off, two of the three newly promoted clubs are familiar faces to the top flight. Leicester City, the 2022-23 Championship champions, and Southampton, who triumphed in the play-offs, have made immediate returns after their relegation in the same season. However, it’s Ipswich Town, who have raised the most eyebrows, securing back-to-back promotions and returning to the Premier League after a 22-year absence.
Ipswich Town’s return marks a remarkable journey, but they will enter the league as somewhat of an unknown entity. Their squad is relatively inexperienced at this level, with only a handful of players having tasted Premier League action. Manager Kieran McKenna, an up-and-coming figure in the coaching world, leads this ambitious side. Despite their lack of top-flight experience, Ipswich will be looking to make a mark in their first Premier League campaign in over two decades.
Last season, Ipswich’s success was driven by the attacking trio of Conor Chaplin, Nathan Broadhead, and Omari Hutchinson, who collectively scored the bulk of their goals. Yet, this trio has just two Premier League appearances between them. Hutchinson, who was on loan from Chelsea last season, has now been signed permanently in a club-record £20 million deal. Manchester City forward Liam Delap, another key signing, joined for a fee that could rise to £20 million. Other summer recruits include Hull defender Jacob Greaves, West Ham’s Ben Johnson, and Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.
Leicester City, on the other hand, are on their third manager since Brendan Rodgers was sacked in April 2023. Dean Smith departed following their relegation, and Enzo Maresca, who led the Foxes to promotion in his only season, has left for Chelsea. Former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has taken the reins. Leicester’s top scorer last season, Jamie Vardy, now 37, continues to lead the line. However, they face financial challenges, with a potential points deduction looming due to breaches of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules during their last stint in the top tier.
Southampton’s return to the Premier League was orchestrated by manager Russell Martin, who guided the Saints back via the play-offs. The team enjoyed a club-record 25-game unbeaten run from September to February last season. Adam Armstrong, who netted 24 goals, was named the club’s player of the season. However, with Che Adams departing for Torino, Southampton have signed Chilean striker Ben Brereton Diaz from Villarreal to bolster their attack.
Despite their achievements, the three promoted clubs are widely tipped as the favourites for relegation, with Nottingham Forest, Everton, and Wolves also expected to struggle in the upcoming season. The battle for survival promises to be as intense as ever, with these clubs eager to prove the doubters wrong and cement their place in the Premier League.
