David Ariyo Leads Sunshine Stars to Victory Over Plateau United

David Ariyo emerged as the hero for Sunshine Stars FC as they edged out Plateau United 3-2 to advance to the round of 16 in the oldest football competition in Nigeria, the President Federation Cup.

The thrilling match took place at the GoalProject in Abuja, where Sunshine Stars displayed a strong attacking presence from the outset. Led by their long-serving captain Abe Sunday, the team combined well on the right flank, with key contributions from Emmanuel Ogbuagu and Chidozie Iwundu.

Sunshine Stars had their first chance just three minutes into the game when Yusuf Ibrahim’s low drive from outside the box was saved by the Plateau United goalkeeper. Despite United settling into the game, they struggled to penetrate the Sunshine Stars’ defense.

David Ariyo showcased his goalkeeping prowess in the 15th minute with a crucial save at the edge of the goal post, keeping the match level. The first half ended goalless, though Sunshine Stars’ Emmanuel Ogbuagu was booked for a rash challenge in the 35th minute, followed by a booking for Duke Osimaga two minutes into the second half.

Plateau United took advantage of a defensive slip to open the scoring in the 50th minute. In response, Sunshine Stars’ coach Kennedy Boboye made several substitutions, introducing Opeoluwa Olufemi, Nelson Osahon, and Suraj Ibrahim in the 57th minute. Despite immediate efforts, including a near-miss by Olufemi, the equalizer remained elusive.

Boboye made further changes in the 78th minute, bringing on Moses Omodumueke and Vincent Temitope. The persistence paid off in stoppage time when captain Abe Sunday delivered a perfect cross from an acute angle, allowing Opeoluwa Olufemi to control and net the equalizer in the 90+3 minute, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, David Ariyo rose to the occasion, making decisive saves that ensured Sunshine Stars’ 3-2 victory. With this win, Plateau United is eliminated from the President Federation Cup, while Sunshine Stars advance to the round of 16.

Sunshine Stars now shift their focus to their next elite league match against Bendel Insurance of Benin, set to take place at the Akure Township Stadium this weekend. Hoping to avoid relegation at all cost.
