President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tunji Bello as the new Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice-Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), pending Senate confirmation.
This announcement was made in a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.
Bello, a seasoned lawyer, administrator, and journalist, brings extensive experience to his new role. He previously served as Secretary to the Lagos State Government and held the position of Commissioner for Environment. His journalism career includes significant roles at Concord Newspapers and THISDAY Newspapers, where he served in various editorial capacities.
The statement highlights Bello’s educational background, noting that he holds a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos, where he also studied law and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002. His journalism career began at Concord Newspapers in 1985, where he rose to become Group Political Editor, Sunday Concord Editor, and Editor of National Concord. In 2001, he was appointed Chairman of the Editorial Board of THISDAY Newspapers. Bello is also a recipient of the US Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship.
President Tinubu expressed his expectation that Bello will fully realise the FCCPC’s mandate, which includes protecting Nigerian consumers’ interests, promoting their welfare, and ensuring the safety and quality of goods and services.
“The President expects that the new Chief Executive Officer of this important agency will ensure the holistic realisation of the Commission’s mandate of protecting and promoting the interest and welfare of Nigerian consumers and ensuring the adoption of measures to guarantee the safety and quality of goods and services,” the statement read.
