President Tinubu Lauds Nigerian Military For Protecting Democracy In Benin

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded the bravery and professionalism of Nigeria’s armed forces for their prompt response to the Government of the Republic of Benin’s request for assistance following a coup attempt earlier today.

Acting on two official requests, President Tinubu directed the Nigerian Air Force to enter Beninese airspace to help dislodge coup plotters who had seized the National Television station and a military camp.

Requests from the Republic of Benin

The Government of the Republic of Benin, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, submitted a formal request for immediate Nigerian air support “in view of the urgency and seriousness of the situation, to safeguard the constitutional order, protect national institutions, and ensure the security of the population.”

A second request called for Nigerian Air Force assets for surveillance and rapid intervention operations under Beninese coordination. Nigerian ground forces were also requested, “strictly for missions approved by the Beninese command to support the protection of constitutional institutions and containment of armed groups.”

Fulfilment of Requests

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, confirmed that all requests have been fully implemented, with Nigerian ground forces now deployed in the Republic of Benin. “We act in full compliance with the orders of our Commander-in-Chief, President Tinubu,” he stated.

Restoration of Constitutional Order

The attempted coup, led by Colonel Pascal Tigri, disrupted the constitutional order in Benin on Sunday morning. The insurgents seized the National TV station, claimed to have deposed President Patrice Talon, and announced the suspension of democratic institutions.

Loyal forces, assisted by Nigeria, regained control within hours, successfully restoring governance and flushing out the coup plotters.

President Tinubu Praises Armed Forces

In his remarks following the restoration of constitutional governance, President Tinubu praised the Nigerian armed forces for their decisive action:

“Today, the Nigerian armed forces demonstrated gallantry and commitment as defenders of constitutional order in the Republic of Benin, acting upon the invitation of its government.

Their actions were fully aligned with the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. By helping to stabilise a neighbouring country, our armed forces have reinforced Nigeria’s long-standing dedication to democratic values.

Nigeria stands firmly with the government and people of the Republic of Benin.”
