President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Chinese President Xi Jinping have held discussions in Beijing aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between their two nations for the benefit of their citizens.

The meeting took place during President Tinubu’s official visit to China, ahead of his participation in the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), scheduled from September 4-6, 2024.

During the talks, both leaders agreed to establish a high-level Nigeria-China community partnership focused on a shared future. This partnership is expected to enhance cooperation between the two countries across various sectors.

President Tinubu, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), emphasized the significance of the visit for both Nigeria and the broader African continent. He expressed gratitude for the warm reception and underscored the importance of deepening the longstanding relations between China and Nigeria, which have spanned over 50 years.

“Nigeria, with its large population and status as Africa’s largest economy, holds great potential,” President Tinubu said. “We have upgraded our relationship with China to a comprehensive developmental partnership. This partnership aims to foster robust development, stability, and security in the West African sub-region, which is crucial.”

President Tinubu also highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable economic growth through ongoing economic reforms, drawing a parallel to the successful reforms undertaken by President Xi in China. “I am a reformer with a proven track record,” he stated. “We are diligently reforming our economy across various sectors, including tax and tariff reviews, to ensure that trading and investment partners can easily bring in and repatriate their investments.”

In his remarks, President Xi Jinping praised the strong mutual understanding between China and Nigeria since the establishment of diplomatic relations over 50 years ago. He noted the importance of unity and win-win cooperation between the two countries, both of which are major developing nations. “Strengthening strategic coordination between China and Nigeria will inject fresh momentum into China-Africa relations and promote common progress among countries of the Global South,” President Xi said.

President Xi also highlighted the upcoming 2024 FOCAC Summit as an opportunity to reflect on the long-standing friendship between China and Africa and to further consolidate these relations. He pledged that China and Nigeria would continue to work closely within the FOCAC framework, serving as a model of cooperation between nations.

During the meeting, both leaders witnessed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) covering various areas of mutual interest. These MOUs include:

– A cooperation plan between Nigeria and China on jointly promoting the Belt and Road Initiative.
– An MOU on the peaceful application of nuclear energy.
– An MOU on strengthening cooperation in human resource development under the Global Development Initiative.
– An MOU on media exchange and cooperation, including a specific agreement between China Media Group and the Nigerian Television Authority.

The signing of these agreements marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria-China relations and enhance cooperation in multiple sectors.
