President Tinubu Strengthens Nigeria-Saint Lucia Ties With Historic Address To Parliament.

On Monday, 30 June 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a landmark address to a special joint sitting of the Senate and House of Assembly of Saint Lucia at the William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom, Sandals Grande, Gros Islet. The event marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with the Caribbean, as Tinubu became the first Nigerian head of state to address Saint Lucia’s parliament, reinforcing historical and cultural ties between the two nations.

Arriving in Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia, on Saturday, 28 June, President Tinubu was warmly received with full military honours at Hewanorra International Airport by Governor-General Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre. The visit, part of a two-nation tour of the Caribbean and South America, underscored Nigeria’s commitment to deepening relations with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

In his address, attended by over 300 guests, including OECS heads of government, senior officials, diplomats, and members of the Nigerian diaspora, President Tinubu announced the formal establishment of diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia, describing it as a “symbolic bridge” to foster closer ties. He proposed a Joint Commission or Political Consultation Agreement to structure cooperation between Nigeria and the OECS, focusing on trade, investment, health, culture, education, and climate resilience. “Nigeria is ready to deepen cooperation with the OECS in mutual interest,” Tinubu declared, highlighting Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest market and a gateway for OECS exports.

A key highlight of the address was Tinubu’s pledge to offer full scholarships to OECS students for studies in Nigerian universities, particularly in maritime and scientific disciplines, starting from the next academic year. He also proposed visa waivers for OECS diplomatic and official passport holders, urging reciprocal measures to facilitate smoother institutional exchanges. “This gesture will foster closer partnerships and people-to-people engagement,” he said, emphasising Nigeria’s Afrocentric foreign policy rooted in Pan-African ideals.

Tinubu underscored the shared heritage between Nigeria and Saint Lucia, shaped by the transatlantic slave trade and colonial history, yet marked by resilience and cultural richness. Quoting Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey, he said, “Get organised and you will compel the world to respect you,” and invoked an African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” He called for unity in addressing shared challenges, particularly climate change, proposing joint research on sustainable agriculture, disaster preparedness, and climate-induced migration.

Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre hailed the visit as a new chapter in bilateral relations, noting the cultural and ancestral links between the two nations. “Saint Lucia and Nigeria share a common strength in the resilience of our people,” Pierre said, advocating for deeper cultural exchanges and a direct air link to boost tourism and business. The session also saw discussions on extending Nigeria’s Technical Aid Corps to provide medical and technical professionals to Saint Lucia, alongside potential investments in digital and renewable energy infrastructure.

The visit, which included a high-level working luncheon with OECS leaders and a tour of Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in Castries to promote academic collaboration, reflects Nigeria’s broader strategy to engage the African diaspora within the African Union’s Sixth Region framework. Following his engagements in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu will proceed to Brazil for the 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

This historic visit has been celebrated as a step towards stronger Africa-Caribbean ties, with Saint Lucian officials and the Nigerian community expressing optimism about future collaborations in education, trade, and cultural exchange.
