Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has expressed grave concern over the alarming state of primary education within the state. Highlighting the dire situation, Governor Fubara revealed that a staggering 75 percent of primary schools in Rivers are devoid of teachers, while a shocking 90 percent suffer from dilapidation.

The governor’s remarks came to light during an assessment conducted by the firm New Global, which had intended to partner with the state government to bolster the capacity of teachers and improve educational standards. However, the findings of the assessment painted a stark picture of neglect and inadequacy in the primary education system.

Governor Fubara emphasised the pivotal role that primary education plays in shaping the future of children, underscoring its significance in character development, skill acquisition, and fostering a love for learning.

He lamented the disregard that this foundational level of education had faced in the past but assured that his administration is committed to revitalising the education sector, along with healthcare and agriculture.

Regarding healthcare, Governor Fubara pointed out that the tertiary health institutions in the state are under immense strain due to the non-functionality of primary and secondary health facilities. He pledged to revisit and revive five zonal hospitals to alleviate pressure on tertiary institutions and improve access to healthcare services.

On the agricultural front, efforts are underway to revamp agricultural facilities and make the sector more attractive to ensure food sufficiency and create employment opportunities for youth. Additionally, plans are in motion to revive moribund state-owned industries to combat unemployment and deter criminal activities.

Governor Fubara expressed gratitude to the Muslim community for their support and cooperation, particularly in mediating conflicts and promoting peace within the state. He assured them of his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for practicing their faith and contributing positively to the state’s development.

In response, the leader of the Rivers State Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor, commended Governor Fubara for his inclusive policies and financial support for the Muslim community. He pledged continued partnership and support for the governor’s people-oriented initiatives, condemning attempts to destabilise the administration through threats and persecution.
