The Lagos State Government has announced temporary traffic diversions and partial road closures across key parts of Lagos for Wednesday, April 8, and Thursday, April 9, 2026.

These measures are to facilitate the commissioning of major infrastructure projects, expected to be attended by top government officials, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the diversions are necessary to ensure public safety and smooth execution of the events.

Schedule of Events and Affected Areas

1. Wednesday, April 8, 2026
  • Project: Opebi–Mende Link Bridge commissioning
  • Time: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Affected Areas:
    • Opebi–Allen corridor
    • Ikeja
    • Ojota
Some of the projects to be unveiled by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Motorists traveling through these areas are advised to avoid the corridor and use alternative routes to prevent congestion.

2. Thursday, April 9, 2026 (Morning Session)
  • Project: Tolu Schools Complex commissioning
  • Time: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Affected Areas:
    • Olodi Apapa
    • Ajegunle

Drivers in these areas are urged to plan ahead and expect delays due to restricted movement.

3. Thursday, April 9, 2026 (Evening Session)
  • Event Location:
    • Eko Hotel and Suites
    • Victoria Island axis
  • Time: 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

This event will also lead to traffic congestion and possible diversions within Victoria Island.

Traffic Management Measures

To mitigate disruptions:
  • Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), will be deployed across affected areas
  • Additional traffic personnel (about 500 officers), will assist in controlling vehicular movement
  • Road users are expected to comply with directives from traffic officials

Significance of the Projects

One of the major highlights is the Opebi–Mende Link Bridge, which is designed to:
  • Improve connectivity between Ikeja and Maryland
  • Reduce traffic congestion along major routes such as Allen Avenue and Ikorodu Road
  • Enhance travel efficiency and reduce commute time

The project reflects the state government’s broader goal of modernising urban infrastructure and easing transportation challenges in Lagos.

Government Advisory

The government has strongly advised residents and commuters to:
  • Plan journeys in advance
  • Use alternative routes where possible
  • Allow extra travel time
  • Cooperate with traffic management officials

Failure to comply may result in significant delays and congestion, especially during peak event hours.

Conclusion

The planned traffic diversions underscore the scale and importance of the infrastructure projects being unveiled in Lagos. While the temporary disruptions may inconvenience commuters, the long-term benefits—particularly improved connectivity and reduced congestion—are expected to significantly enhance mobility within the state.
