The Police Service Commission (PSC) has resumed its mandatory promotion examinations for senior police officers, emphasizing that only merit will determine advancement within the force.
On Friday, over 600 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) participated in written exams at the PSC’s Parry Osayande Auditorium in Jabi, Abuja, as part of their consideration for promotion to the rank of Superintendent of Police.
Retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, PSC Commissioner representing the Judiciary, stated that the initiative aims to enhance officers’ mental capacity and service delivery. He emphasized that future promotions will be contingent on performance in these exams.
DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd.), Chairman of the Commission’s Standing Committee on Police Matters, described the promotion exams as timely and necessary to address systemic issues within the force. He warned officers against offering bribes to PSC staff, stating, “We will send you away if caught bribing our staff. Please don’t embarrass us.”
PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd.), assured that the Commission will maintain credibility and fairness in the promotion process. He stressed that promotions must be earned and justifiable, stating, “The Police of our dream should be the Police that can work with minimal supervision and can deliver without undue influence.”
The promotion examinations and interviews will continue next week with the Commissioner’s cadre, culminating in a plenary meeting later this month.
