“In a bid to reinforce leadership and enhance national security, the Police Service Commission (PSC), has promoted several senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to higher ranks.”

Rigorous Selection Process

According to Torty Njoku Kalu, Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, the promotions followed rigorous written examinations and oral interviews, which concluded on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at the PSC Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The exercise was presided over by PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retd).

Senior Officers Elevated

The promotions include:

  • AIG Mohammed Usman Gumel, previously Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Community Policing Project Department, Research and Planning, Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja.

  • Seven Commissioners of Police elevated to Assistant Inspectors-General of Police.

  • Three Deputy Commissioners of Police promoted to the rank of Commissioners of Police.

These promotions recognize officers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and professionalism throughout their careers.

Chairman’s Message: Leadership Comes with Responsibility

In congratulating the newly promoted officers, DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd), emphasized that promotion comes with higher expectations. He urged the officers to:

  • Embrace their new responsibilities with dedication.

  • Rededicate themselves to effective policing.

  • Protect lives and property and maintain law and order.

He reaffirmed the PSC’s commitment to regular, merit-based promotions in line with best practices, ensuring a police force led by capable and competent officers.

Strengthening the Police Force

Analysts say that these promotions are a strategic step toward building stronger leadership in the Nigeria Police Force, enhancing operational efficiency, and fostering public trust. By elevating experienced officers to senior ranks, the PSC seeks to ensure better planning, execution, and supervision of policing activities nationwide.
