The Police Service Commission (PSC) has been urged to investigate Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Emmanuel Aina after protesters stormed its headquarters in Abuja, accusing him of abuse of office and intimidation.
The protesters, under the banner of the Centre for Human Rights and Advocacy in Africa Network (CHRAAN), called on the commission to take urgent action against AIG Aina for allegedly harassing an Abuja-based lawyer, Uche Anya, and unlawfully taking over his property. The group demanded that the PSC uphold justice and ensure accountability within the police force.
According to the petition submitted to the commission, AIG Aina allegedly used his influence to intimidate and threaten Anya over a disputed property. The protesters claimed that such conduct undermines public trust in the police and called for a full-scale investigation to protect citizens from oppression by those in authority.
Speaking during the protest, CHRAAN’s Executive Director, Dr. Stanley Okoro, said the commission must act swiftly to restore public confidence in the police. “We cannot have a system where officers who should protect citizens are instead the ones harassing them,” he said. “The PSC must send a strong message that no one is above the law.”
The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “Stop Police Intimidation” and “PSC Must Act Now,” urging the commission to suspend AIG Aina pending the outcome of investigations. They also called on President Bola Tinubu to support reforms that promote transparency and accountability in law enforcement agencies.
As of press time, the Police Service Commission had yet to issue an official response to the petition. However, sources within the commission confirmed that the matter has been acknowledged and would be reviewed according to due process.
