Putin’s Three-Day Truce With Ukraine Takes Effect Amid Skepticism

Putin’s Three-Day Truce With Ukraine Takes Effect Amid Skepticism.

A three-day truce declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin took effect today, aimed at coinciding with Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations. The Kremlin hopes this gesture will test Ukraine’s readiness for peace, but Kyiv has dismissed the move as mere theatrics.

Despite the truce, exchanges of aerial attacks between Moscow and Kyiv continued just hours before the ceasefire was set to begin. Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod airport was temporarily closed due to Ukrainian drone strikes, while Russian attacks on Ukraine resulted in at least two fatalities.

Background of the Conflict

Russia’s military offensive against Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has led to significant tensions between the two nations. Putin’s truce announcement comes after pressure from the United States to halt Russia’s assault on Ukraine. However, Ukraine remains skeptical about Russia’s intentions, citing hundreds of ceasefire violations during a previous 30-hour truce ordered by Putin for Easter.

Reactions from World Leaders

US President Donald Trump has been working to end the conflict, but his efforts have yet to yield results. US Vice President JD Vance has called for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders are in Moscow for Victory Day celebrations.

Uncertainty Surrounding the Truce

It’s unclear whether both sides will adhere to the ceasefire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has renewed his proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, stating that the world is not seeing any response from Russia. The Kremlin has vowed to honour the truce during the holiday period but will respond immediately if attacked.

Victory Day Celebrations

Russia marks Victory Day with a grand parade of military equipment on Red Square, featuring an address from Putin. Over 20 world leaders are expected to attend the May 9 parade, amidst heightened security measures, including jammed internet connections due to perceived threats from Ukraine.
