Ralf Rangnick won’t be taking over as Bayern Boss despite initial reports suggesting he’s close to an agreement with the German side.
Ralf Rangnick has confirmed his commitment to remain as the Austria national team manager, despite engaging in discussions with Bayern Munich earlier.
The 65-year-old former Manchester United boss was in talks with Bayern Munich earlier this week, a move that was widely anticipated as a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, who is set to depart at the end of the season.
In a statement, Rangnick expressed his dedication to leading Austria, stating, “I am the Austrian team boss with all my heart.” He clarified that his decision should not be viewed as a rejection of Bayern Munich but rather a choice aligned with his team’s objectives and collective ambitions.
Rangnick is poised to guide Austria through the upcoming European Championship in Germany and intends to honor his contract, which extends until 2026.
Regarding Bayern Munich’s managerial search, the club is solely engaged with Rangnick and has not pursued discussions with any other candidates. This development comes after Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, another potential candidate, withdrew himself from consideration.
Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen team halted Bayern’s quest for a 12th consecutive Bundesliga title this season. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich recently played a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.
Rangnick’s coaching experience includes managerial roles at Ulm, Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke, and RB Leipzig, in addition to his interim stint at Manchester United during the 2021-22 season.
Under Rangnick’s guidance, Austria reached the Round of 16 in Euro 2020, held in 2021, before being eliminated by eventual champions Italy.
