Renowned Nigerian Filmmaker Kayode Peters Passes Away In Toronto.

The Nigerian entertainment industry is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished talents, Kayode Peters Adewumi, fondly known as “KP,” who passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, 28 June 2025, in Toronto, Canada, following a prolonged illness. The celebrated filmmaker, director, and actor, aged 49, leaves behind a remarkable legacy that has profoundly impacted Nollywood and beyond.

In a heartfelt statement shared on his official Instagram page, Peters’ family announced: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved, Kayode Peters Adewumi, who passed on peacefully this morning, June 28, 2025, in Toronto, Canada. KP braved, challenged, and conquered a long-time illness until his last breath this morning. KP, a cherished son, husband, father, brother, and friend, a gifted filmmaker, actor, and producer whose work inspired many. Beyond his talent, it was his kindness, warmth, and generous spirit that truly defined him. He touched countless lives, both on and off the screen, and will be deeply missed.”

Born on 25 September 1975 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Kayode Peters was a proud Yoruba and devout Christian whose passion for storytelling began at the University of Lagos, where he studied English and honed his craft with Theatre 15. His career took flight in the early 2000s with the creation of the iconic comedy series *Flatmates*, a sitcom that became a cornerstone of Nigerian television. Peters later served as executive producer for its successor, *My Flatmates*, further cementing his influence in the industry.

Peters’ creative portfolio extended beyond *Flatmates*. He produced and acted in popular series such as *Twilight Zone*, *Papa Ajasco and Company*, and *Extended Family*, showcasing his ability to blend humour with poignant social commentary. His 2021 web series *Meet My Girlfriends*, which followed the lives of three housemates, demonstrated his knack for crafting relatable, character-driven narratives that resonated with audiences both in Nigeria and internationally. His work earned accolades at prestigious film festivals in Cannes, Toronto, and Texas, highlighting his global impact.

Described as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s contemporary theatre and television scene, Peters was not only a creative powerhouse but also a mentor to many aspiring actors and comedians. Colleagues and fans alike have praised his humility, generosity, and dedication to uplifting others in the industry. “He was an angel, a helper to the helpless and rejected, providing opportunities to anyone who asked,”mediator. I was still,” one tribute read, reflecting the outpouring of grief and admiration from the entertainment community.

Seun Oloketuyi, founder of the Best of Nollywood Awards, confirmed the news on social media, writing, “Bad News emerging from Canada indicates Filmmaker Kayode Peters is dead.” Entertainment blogger Cutie Juls also shared, “Sad, Kayode Peters, movie actor and producer passed away in Canada this morning. May his soul rest in perfect peace.” The news, which came just three days after Peters celebrated his wedding anniversary, has sent shockwaves through Nollywood, with fans and colleagues flooding social media with tributes.

While some reports suggest Peters travelled to Canada for medical treatment, possibly related to complications following surgery, the exact nature of his illness remains undisclosed. He is survived by his wife, Alexander Peters, and their three children. The family has requested privacy as they grieve and make arrangements for his funeral.

Kayode Peters’ contributions to Nigerian entertainment, from his groundbreaking sitcoms to his mentorship of emerging talent, have left an indelible mark. As Nollywood mourns the loss of a visionary, his legacy as a storyteller and a compassionate soul will continue to inspire generations.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.
