Ruben Amorim Bids Emotional Farewell To Sporting, Set For Manchester United Challenge.

Ruben Amorim couldn’t have scripted it better. His last home match as Sporting Lisbon’s manager, after four and a half transformative years at the club, came with a memorable victory over Manchester City. It was a poignant farewell for Amorim, whose new role at Manchester United will see him go head-to-head with the very side that has dominated English football for the past decade.

The timing of this fixture was fate itself—a scheduling twist, coupled with Sporting’s refusal to release Amorim early, crafted a storybook ending that could hardly have been improved. “It was written it had to be like this,” said Amorim, clearly moved, after Sporting handed City their third loss in a week, marking the English club’s heaviest defeat since September 2020.

The victory ignited celebrations that resonated across Lisbon. Hours after the final whistle, fans were still singing, and the club’s faithful made their affection for Amorim known. The 39-year-old was given a hero’s send-off, repeatedly brought to the front of the squad as they took a lap of honour to greet fans who clearly cherish him despite previous speculation of a rift.

Amorim, who had previously shied away from the public festivities that followed Sporting’s two Portuguese league titles, was visibly emotional. His first title win ended a 19-year drought, and he has since become an icon among players and supporters alike. During the celebrations, Amorim’s players showed their admiration by tossing him into the air, a gesture that underscored their respect for the man who will lead them for just one more game.

After the upcoming fixture against Braga on Sunday, Amorim will head to Manchester for a new challenge at Old Trafford. His departure marks the end of a successful era at Sporting, and he leaves with the club and its fans wishing him the best in his next adventure. For Amorim, the journey continues, but what awaits him in Manchester promises to be the challenge of a lifetime.
