Russia Braces For Formidable Super Eagles Despite Osimhen, Lookman Absence

Russia Braces For Formidable Super Eagles Despite Osimhen, Lookman Absence.

Russia’s national football team manager, Valery Karpin, has warned that Nigeria’s Super Eagles remain a formidable force ahead of their historic first-ever international friendly clash at Luzhniki Stadium on Friday, 6 June, despite the absence of star forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. The match, kicking off at 6 p.m., is part of both teams’ preparations for upcoming international tournaments.

Karpin dismissed suggestions that the Super Eagles are weakened by the omission of Osimhen, the former African Footballer of the Year who led Galatasaray to a Turkish Super Lig and Cup double, and Lookman, the reigning African Footballer of the Year who helped Atalanta secure UEFA Champions League qualification. Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, excluded the duo, along with Fulham’s Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey, to prioritise player recovery after a gruelling club season and to assess emerging talents for the Unity Cup and the Russia friendly. “Of course, I would have liked to have both Osimhen and Lookman to test our team against the best players,” Karpin told Komsomolskaya Pravda. “But their absence certainly does not make Nigeria fundamentally weaker.”

The Russian coach highlighted the quality of Nigeria’s remaining squad, singling out Sevilla’s Kelechi Iheanacho and Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface as significant threats. “We’re looking forward to facing top Super Eagles players like Iheanacho and Boniface,” Karpin noted, adding that Russia’s preparations remain unchanged despite the absences. Russia’s confidence was echoed by midfielder Andrei Mostovoy, who remarked, “We’ve played weaker opponents,” underscoring the team’s readiness for the challenge.

Nigeria enters the match on a high, having clinched the Unity Cup in London with victories over Ghana and Jamaica, even without Osimhen and Lookman. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the return of key players like Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Frank Onyeka, and captain Ahmed Musa, bolstering a squad that blends foreign-based stars with Nigeria Premier Football League talent. Chelle’s decision to rest Osimhen and Lookman, who scored 36 and 20 goals respectively for their clubs this season, reflects a strategic focus on player welfare and squad depth.

Karpin’s comments reflect cautious optimism, acknowledging Nigeria’s depth while expressing a desire to test his side against Africa’s best. As the Super Eagles aim to extend their unbeaten run, Friday’s clash promises to be a thrilling contest, showcasing the strength of Nigerian football on the global stage.
