Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday formally inaugurated the board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), marking a major step in the state’s effort to establish an independent electricity regulatory framework and improve power supply for residents and businesses.

The inauguration ceremony took place at Lagos House, the seat of government in the state capital, Ikeja, on March 9, 2026.

Strengthening Lagos’ Electricity Governance

Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the formal inauguration of the board represents a crucial milestone in the implementation of the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024, which was signed in 2024 to give the state greater authority over the generation, distribution, and regulation of electricity within its territory.

According to the governor, the law empowers Lagos to play a more active role in shaping its electricity market, reducing dependence on centralised national power structures and enabling the state to pursue innovative energy solutions.

“With the inauguration of this board, we are taking another decisive step toward strengthening the regulation of electricity in Lagos State,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Our goal is to build a power sector that works better for residents, businesses, and the long-term future of Lagos.”

Mandate of LASERC

The newly inaugurated board will oversee the operations of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which has been tasked with regulating the electricity market within the state.

Under its mandate, LASERC will:

  • License electricity generation, distribution, and supply companies operating within Lagos

  • Establish and monitor fair electricity tariffs

  • Protect the interests of consumers

  • Promote transparency and accountability in the electricity market

  • Encourage competition among service providers

The commission will also play a strategic role in driving innovation within the state’s energy sector.

Focus on Innovation and Renewable Energy

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the regulatory body will support the development of renewable energy solutions and modern power infrastructure to meet the demands of Africa’s most populous city.

The commission is expected to encourage investment in renewable energy technologies, distributed power systems, and other energy-efficient solutions aimed at improving electricity reliability and sustainability.

Officials said the initiative is part of Lagos State’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and ensure a more resilient power supply for households, industries, and commercial centers.

A Step Toward Reliable Power

Electricity supply remains one of the major challenges facing businesses and residents in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub and one of Africa’s largest urban economies. State officials believe that the establishment of LASERC will help create a more structured, transparent, and competitive electricity market capable of attracting private sector investment.

Sanwo-Olu noted that with the board now in place, Lagos is better positioned to implement policies that will improve service delivery and accelerate the development of modern energy systems.

“This commission will ensure that electricity providers operate within clear standards, tariffs are fair, and consumers are protected,” the governor said.

He added that the move represents a forward-looking approach to energy governance in Lagos, designed to support economic growth while meeting the rising electricity needs of its rapidly expanding population.

The inauguration of the LASERC board is widely seen as a foundational step toward establishing a more reliable and efficient power sector in Lagos State.
