Scavenger Killed In Grenade Explosion In Lagos, Nigeria.

A tragic incident occurred earlier today in the Idi-Araba neighbourhood of Mushin, Lagos State, where a scavenger lost his life after a military-grade grenade detonated unexpectedly. The explosion, which took place in a metal scrap yard, has left the local community in shock and raised concerns about the handling of dangerous materials.

According to eyewitness reports, the deceased, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was among a group of scavengers attempting to dismantle what they believed to be scrap metal. Unbeknownst to them, the object in question was a live military-grade grenade. The blast occurred shortly after midday, with one eyewitness, Akin Olawale, recounting the harrowing moment: “We heard a loud explosion around 12 PM. At first, no one knew what had happened. It was only when the police arrived that we realised it was a grenade. They were trying to cut it open when it went off.”

The Lagos State Police Command swiftly responded to the scene, confirming the cause of the explosion. Spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin stated, “The explosion was caused by a military-grade grenade. One person was killed on the spot, and security operatives have secured the area.” He added that two additional undetonated grenades, also in the possession of the scavengers, were safely removed from the site by experts from the Explosive and Ordnance Department, averting further disaster.

Local sources suggest that the scavengers may have stumbled upon the explosives while collecting scrap metal, a common livelihood for many in the area. The origin of the grenades remains unclear, though authorities have launched an investigation to determine how such dangerous military equipment ended up in civilian hands.

The incident has sparked alarm among residents of Idi-Araba, an area already known for its challenges with infrastructural development. “It’s terrifying to think something like this could happen here,” said one local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We need answers about where these grenades came from and how to stop this from happening again.”

This is not the first time Lagos has faced incidents involving scavengers and hazardous materials, but the involvement of military-grade explosives marks a worrying escalation. The police have assured the public that the situation is under control and that efforts are underway to ensure the safety of the community.

Further details are expected as the investigation unfolds. For now, the tragic loss of life serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by those working in informal sectors, often without adequate protection or awareness of the dangers they encounter.
