“Senate Approves Ngbea, Holds Back Omoregbe’s FCSC Nomination”

“Decision follows objections from senators over previous conduct and regional representation.”

The Senate on Wednesday deliberated on the confirmation of nominees for appointment as commissioners of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), taking decisive action on two key nominations.

The report of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters, presented by its chairman Cyril Fasuyi, covered the nominees Idahagbon Omoregie, representing Edo, Ekiti, and Ondo states, and Ngbea Gabriel, representing Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau states.

Omoregie Nomination Stepped Down

The nomination of Omoregie was stepped down following objections raised by several senators, including Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North). Oshiomhole questioned Omoregie’s conduct during his previous tenure as a federal commissioner, citing concerns over recruitment, promotion, and alleged malpractices. He requested that the nomination be deferred to allow for a replacement from the same senatorial zone.

“I had the privilege and honour of nominating him five years ago. But, with his conduct as a federal commissioner, a lot of issues of corruption and other malpractices were raised,” Oshiomhole said.

Other senators backed the move to step down Omoregie’s nomination. Sani Musa (Niger East), noted that nominees should not proceed without the support of their home-state senator, while Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), emphasized parliamentary practice, stating that if two senators oppose a nomination, it should be withdrawn for further consultation.

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary, agreed and urged the chamber not to overemphasize the issue. Following a voice vote, the Senate formally stepped down Omoregie’s nomination, allowing for further legislative and regional consultations.

Ngbea Gabriel Confirmed

In contrast, the nomination of Ngbea Gabriel was confirmed after a voice vote and approval by the committee of the whole. Ngbea, representing Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau states, will now assume duties as a commissioner of the FCSC, a key body responsible for overseeing the recruitment, promotion, and discipline of civil servants across Nigeria.

Implications for the FCSC

The Federal Civil Service Commission plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficiency and integrity of Nigeria’s civil service. The Senate’s actions reflect its oversight responsibilities, balancing executive nominations with legislative scrutiny to uphold transparency and accountability in public service appointments.
