The Nigerian Senate convened a crucial meeting today with top officials from security agencies and the economic team to address the nation’s escalating security concerns.
At approximately 11:35 am, the Senate took the unprecedented step of suspending its rules to grant access to non-lawmakers for participation in the plenary session.
Senate President GodsWill Akpabio, who presided over the session, had summoned key security personnel two weeks ago for a meeting scheduled for last Tuesday. However, the Chief of Defence Staff and the National Security Adviser were notably absent, prompting the Senate to postpone the meeting.
Akpabio emphasised the importance of a comprehensive approach to tackling security challenges, expressing a preference for the inclusion of representatives from the economic team.
Today’s meeting, rescheduled from last week, saw an expanded guest list, including the Minister of Defence, Minister of State for Defence, Minister of Police Affairs, Minister of State for Police Affairs, Minister of Interior, Minister of Finance, and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.
Upon welcoming the guests, Akpabio extended gratitude to the security chiefs for their presence, highlighting the significance of their engagement with the Senate.
Following Akpabio’s remarks, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele proposed a motion to transition into a closed-door session for security briefings. The motion was swiftly approved through a voice vote conducted by the Senate President.
Subsequently, lawmakers and representatives from the security and economic teams convened for a closed-door session, where detailed discussions on national security matters were expected to take place.
