Tensions flare once again in Olota, a Urhobo Creek community in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, as the military conducts another operation in the area.
This follows the recent unrest in neighbouring Okuama, where 17 military personnel were tragically killed by irate youths.
Reports indicate that soldiers, in pursuit of suspects linked to the Okuama incident, descended on Olota, allegedly leaving destruction in their wake.
Witnesses recount soldiers burning two houses, destroying another, and apprehending several individuals, including the community chairman, Matthew Olokpa, and nine others.
According to residents, the military operation, which involved three gunboats, resulted in gunfire echoing throughout Olota. Concerns mount among residents as the community reels from the aftermath of the incursion.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has issued a statement claiming a significant breakthrough in their operation, citing the discovery of an armoury containing a cache of arms and ammunition in Olota.
The raid, reportedly based on actionable intelligence, led to the uncovering of various firearms and illicit items concealed in the residence of a suspected gun runner, identified as Mr. Kenneth.
The recovered arsenal includes rifles, sub-machine guns, cartridges, locally fabricated guns, and suspected narcotics. Additionally, three suspects were apprehended during the operation.
