The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has dismissed the possibility of entering the presidential race, despite persistent encouragement from Nigerians.
Speaking at the 8th House of Justice Summit in Kaduna State, Kukah asserted that he would not be an ideal President as Nigerians are not seeking individuals perceived as “good” or “holy” to lead them.
Addressing the audience, Kukah stated, “A lot of people have been saying to me in the last 30 years, ‘Come and contest elections. Come and contest the presidency of Nigeria.’ Oga, let me finish with parish work first. Because if I were under that illusion — a lot of people have told me, ‘We will pay for you. You don’t have to pay, because we believe you will make a good President.’ But I know that I will not make a good President because good presidents are not what you’re looking for. Because what do you mean by good?”
Kukah’s remarks underscore a reluctance to pursue a political career, emphasizing that the qualities perceived as “good” may not align with the expectations and demands of political leadership in Nigeria.
