The South African ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, was found dead outside a luxury hotel in Paris on Tuesday.
According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, Mthethwa’s wife reported him missing on Monday evening after receiving a worrying text message from him. The police launched a search operation and later found his body near the Hyatt Regency hotel.
Mthethwa, 58, had booked a room on the 22nd floor of the hotel, and investigators found that a secured window had been forced open. The police believe he might have taken his own life, but the exact circumstances of his death are still under investigation. “The ambassador’s disappearance was reported on Sept 29 by his wife, who said she ‘received a worrying message from him in the evening,'” the prosecutor’s office said.
The South African government has confirmed Mthethwa’s passing, describing him as a “distinguished servant of the nation” who dedicated his career to serving in critical ministerial portfolios. Minister Ronald Lamola expressed his condolences, stating, “I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community.”
Mthethwa had a long and distinguished career in South African politics, serving as Minister of Arts and Culture, Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, and Minister of Police. He was appointed ambassador to France in February 2024 and was also the permanent delegate of South Africa to UNESCO.
The investigation into Mthethwa’s death is ongoing, with both French and South African authorities working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his passing. A source close to the case suggested that Mthethwa suffered from depression, which might have contributed to his death.
