South-South APC Backs Tinubu And Governors For 2027 Elections.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-South geopolitical zone has unanimously endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election. The decision was made during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Saturday, 5 July 2025, in Benin City, Edo State, where the party also threw its support behind its four incumbent governors for re-election.

The meeting, attended by prominent figures including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, APC National Vice Chairman (South-South) Victor Giadom, and governors from the region, saw the party pass a vote of confidence in Tinubu for his transformative policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda. The stakeholders praised the administration’s inclusive approach, noting that the South-South is no longer sidelined in national development. Key projects highlighted included the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, the rehabilitation of the East-West Road, and the revitalisation of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Railway.

In a communiqué read by Giadom, the APC also endorsed Governors Bassey Edet Otu (Cross River), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Umo Bassey Eno (Akwa Ibom) as sole candidates for the 2027 governorship elections in their respective states. The latter two governors, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were welcomed for their “patriotic decision” to join the APC. The stakeholders urged the remaining non-APC governors in the region, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers and Douye Diri of Bayelsa, to follow suit and align with the ruling party.

Senate President Akpabio, who doubles as the APC South-South leader, delivered a speech titled “United Vision: Advancing South-South Progress Under President Bola Tinubu.” He emphasised the administration’s achievements in infrastructure, education, and energy, particularly the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act, which enhances transparency and benefits host communities. Akpabio called for unity and grassroots mobilisation, urging stakeholders to rally behind Tinubu’s re-election to ensure continued progress. “The South-South is the heartbeat of Nigeria’s economy, and we must support a leader who recognises our role,” he said.

The stakeholders also commended Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his steadfast support for Tinubu’s agenda and his notable achievements in Abuja. The meeting, which included senators like Adams Oshiomhole, ministers, and other party chieftains, concluded with a pledge to strengthen the APC’s dominance in the region and nationally. Governor Okpebholo, the host, described the gathering as a historic display of unity, vowing to deliver 2.5 million votes for Tinubu in Edo State in 2027.

The APC’s South-South zone reaffirmed its commitment to Tinubu’s vision, citing ongoing reforms such as the student loan initiative and tax exemptions for low-income earners as evidence of his dedication to Nigeria’s growth. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the region’s leaders declared their resolve to ensure the party remains “the party of progress, justice, and the people.”
