Southern Kaduna Leaders Condemn Murder Of Catholic Priest, Demand Action On Insecurity.

The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association (SKCLA) has expressed deep sorrow and condemnation over the abduction and killing of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan. The tragic incident, carried out by terrorists, has once again raised serious concerns over the escalating insecurity in Kaduna State.

In a statement issued over the weekend, SKCLA Chairman, Apostle Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, described the killing as a painful loss to the Church and a disturbing sign of the worsening violence in the region.

“We stand with you in this moment of grief and pray that God grants you the strength and comfort to bear this tragic loss,” Apostle Kure stated.

Targeted Attacks on Clergy Raise Concerns

The Christian leaders noted that the murder of Reverend Father Okechukwu follows a troubling pattern of attacks on clergymen in Southern Kaduna. They recalled previous incidents, including the abduction and brutal killing of Reverend Father John Mark Cheitnum in 2022 and the assassination of Pastor Musa Mairiga of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA).

“These repeated assaults on men of God raise serious concerns: Is this a deliberate and systematic attack on Christians, particularly priests and pastors?” the SKCLA questioned.

The leaders warned that if left unchecked, such attacks could take on religious connotations and threaten the fragile peace in Kaduna State.

“They may be criminals, but why are church clerics the primary targets?” Apostle Kure asked.

Calls for Government Action

SKCLA urged the government and security agencies to intensify efforts in tackling terrorism and ensuring the safety of citizens.

“We strongly challenge the security agencies to rise to the occasion and put an end to this wave of violence. It is unacceptable that those who dedicate their lives to preaching peace and serving humanity continue to be hunted down without consequences for the perpetrators,” the statement read.

The Christian leaders called for immediate and decisive action to prevent further bloodshed and restore public confidence in security.

Appeal for Vigilance and Justice

Apostle Kure encouraged Christians and residents of Southern Kaduna to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.

“Our collective safety depends on our willingness to cooperate and take proactive measures against these evil forces,” he said.

As the community mourns Reverend Father Okechukwu, SKCLA urged authorities to ensure that justice is served and the perpetrators brought to book.

“We pray that his soul finds eternal rest and call on the government to take swift action to prevent further tragedies. May God comfort his family, the Catholic Church, and all affected by this senseless act of violence,” Apostle Kure concluded.
