The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that its declaration of activist Omoyele Sowore as a wanted person remains active, stating that he has not honoured the request to report for questioning.
The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, explained that the activist is still being sought over allegations linked to plans to cause disruption on the Third Mainland Bridge.
The Police Commissioner said the wanted notice issued on Monday was connected to allegations of public disturbance and an attempt to commit a serious offence. According to him, Sowore was expected to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department where inquiries into the matter are ongoing, but he failed to show up.
Jimoh revealed that Sowore’s lawyer had initially reached out through a text message to discuss arrangements for him to report to the police. He stated, “They agreed that Sowore will turn up at the CID because that is where the investigation is being carried out. The normal practice in investigation is to conclude inquiries before going for arrest.”
However, the Commissioner expressed disappointment that the agreement was not respected. He added, “Throughout yesterday he has failed to report and we are going to do everything within the ambit of the law to get him arrested, investigated and prosecuted for these offences.” He insisted that the police would proceed with lawful measures to ensure he is brought in for questioning.
Jimoh also maintained that he acted within his authority in declaring the activist wanted. He advised those criticising the move to seek legal redress if they felt it was unjustified. He said the command would not be deterred from following due process in handling the case.
The police reiterated that the declaration remains in force until Sowore presents himself to the authorities. Meanwhile, public reactions continue to trail the development as attention remains on whether the activist will honour the invitation or face arrest by law enforcement officers.
