Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Isa-Onilu, highlighted the significance of sports in shaping Nigeria’s national values during a meeting with sports journalists from the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Kwara State
Isa-Onilu emphasized that Nigeria lacks a codified set of attributes that define the essence of being Nigerian. To address this gap, NOA plans to leverage sports as one of the key elements in formulating a new national value charter.
He stressed the need for Nigerians to have a distinct identity, and sports presents an accessible platform to foster unity and define the true essence of being Nigerian.
Isa-Onilu noted that the current trend where Nigerians passionately support clubs from foreign leagues, like the English Premier League (EPL), does not fully promote the Nigerian identity.
Working closely with the Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh, NOA aims to cultivate a cultural shift that not only enhances the Nigerian brand and character but also transforms sports into a thriving industry within Nigeria.
This strategic approach aligns with NOA’s broader goal of instilling national values and fostering a sense of unity and pride among Nigerians through sports.
