Sterling ‘Has Let Team-Mates Down’, But Maresca Faces ‘Impossible Job’

Sterling ‘Has Let Team-Mates Down’, But Maresca Faces ‘Impossible Job’.

Chelsea’s early season troubles have surfaced, with Raheem Sterling at the centre of controversy before their Premier League opener against Manchester City. Sterling, who was notably absent from the matchday squad, expressed his dissatisfaction just an hour before kick-off, raising questions about his future at the club.

The drama began when Sterling’s representatives released a statement seeking “clarity” on his role at Chelsea after he was left out of the squad. This move did not sit well with many, including former Manchester City defender Micah Richards, who accused Sterling of “letting his team-mates down.” Jamie Redknapp, another former professional, dismissed the statement as “absolute rubbish.”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who took over from Mauricio Pochettino this summer, responded by saying he still wants Sterling in the squad, but highlighted the challenge of managing Chelsea’s oversized roster. With 42 players listed on the club’s website, and only 20 spots available for a matchday squad, difficult decisions are inevitable. Sterling was just one of many to miss out, as Chelsea suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, marking a difficult start to the season.

This selection dilemma has placed Maresca in a challenging position, with former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin suggesting that Sterling “looks to be the next one on the block” at the club. Nevin speculated that the situation could lower Sterling’s transfer value, as potential buyers might see him as “damaged goods.”

Sterling’s struggles since his £50m move from Manchester City two years ago have been well-documented. Although he has scored nine and ten goals in his two seasons at Chelsea, his form has not been enough to secure a regular starting spot or maintain his place in the England squad.

Chelsea’s issues extend beyond Sterling. The club has spent around £185m on 11 new signings this summer, adding to an already bloated squad. Players like Conor Gallagher, Trevoh Chalobah, and Romelu Lukaku face uncertain futures, with Maresca openly stating that some players will need to leave.

Maresca’s predecessor, Graham Potter, faced similar challenges during his tenure, struggling to manage a squad so large that the dressing room reportedly had to be expanded. With the squad size remaining a persistent issue, Maresca’s task of keeping everyone happy has been described as “virtually impossible” by Redknapp, who pointed out that the best teams operate with a more manageable roster size.

As the season progresses, Chelsea and Maresca will need to address these squad management issues if they hope to turn their fortunes around. For Sterling, the immediate focus will be on regaining his place in the team and proving his worth, despite the swirling speculation about his future.
