NSWA Appeals For Protection Of Sex Workers From Harassment.
The Nigeria Sex Workers Association (NSWA) has called on law enforcement authorities to ensure the safety and protection of its members from harassment, abuse, and extortion across the country.
In a statement released on Tuesday and cited by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the National Coordinator of NSWA, Amaka Enemo, expressed concern over the increasing incidents of violence against sex workers. She highlighted a troubling rise in physical assaults and harassment, often perpetrated by clients and law enforcement officers.
Enemo urged law enforcement agencies to uphold the dignity and humanity of sex workers, emphasising the need for their protection from all forms of abuse.
“We appeal to law enforcement authorities to recognise the fundamental rights of sex workers and ensure their safety. No one deserves to face violence or extortion, regardless of their occupation,” Enemo stated.
The organisation stressed that the alarming trend undermines the basic principles of human rights and called for immediate action to address the situation.
The NSWA’s plea sheds light on the broader issue of safeguarding the rights of vulnerable groups, urging society and authorities to work collaboratively to foster a safer environment for all citizens.
