Super Eagles Qualify For AFCON 2025 Despite Shocking Loss To Rwanda

Super Eagles Qualify For AFCON 2025 Despite Shocking Loss To Rwanda Which Has Sparked Many Reactions From Supporters.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have secured their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) but ended their qualification campaign on a disappointing note with a 2-1 defeat to Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Despite finishing as Group D leaders with 11 points, the loss has raised concerns about the team’s preparedness for the tournament and the leadership of interim head coach Austin Eguavoen.

The Super Eagles confirmed their qualification last Thursday after a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic, coupled with Libya’s victory over Rwanda. However, Monday’s match against Rwanda highlighted issues within the squad, as the visitors capitalised on Nigeria’s lacklustre performance.

Nigeria opened the scoring through substitute Samuel Chukwueze, who delivered a brilliant solo effort just before the hour mark. The AC Milan winger dribbled past three defenders before slotting the ball into the net. Rwanda, however, mounted a swift comeback. Jimmy Mutsinzi equalised with a header in the 72nd minute, and Innocent Nshuti sealed the victory three minutes later, leaving the home crowd stunned.

This defeat, the first for Nigeria in the qualifying series, has sparked debate over the future of Eguavoen as head coach. Some critics, including respected journalist Femi Fabunmi, have called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a foreign coach ahead of AFCON 2025. Fabunmi acknowledged Eguavoen’s efforts but suggested he return to his role as the federation’s technical director.

The campaign itself was a mix of highs and lows. Nigeria’s early victories against Benin Republic and Libya were followed by draws against Rwanda and Benin Republic. A controversial three points awarded after an abandoned game against Libya further complicated the narrative, and Monday’s loss has only deepened concerns.

With less than a year before the tournament, there is a growing consensus that the Super Eagles need a fresh approach. Critics have pointed out the lack of cohesion within the team and questioned their overall commitment. The defeat to Rwanda, while inconsequential to qualification, is seen as a missed opportunity to strengthen the team’s reputation and FIFA ranking.

The focus now shifts to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and preparations for AFCON 2025. Fans and stakeholders alike are hopeful that the NFF will make the necessary adjustments to ensure the Super Eagles perform at their best on the continental stage.
