Super Eagles Seek Redemption In Kigali As World Cup Hopes Hang In The Balance.
The Super Eagles are determined to revive their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign as they face Rwanda today in a crucial Group C encounter at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali. Anything short of victory could severely dent their chances of securing a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Currently sitting in fifth place with just three points, Nigeria trails group leaders Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin Republic, who each have seven points from four matches. A win today could reignite their hopes and place them back in contention for the sole World Cup ticket from the group.
To bolster support for the team, the Federal Government has mobilised the Nigerian community in Rwanda, purchasing 500 match tickets to ensure a strong home-like atmosphere for the Super Eagles. Additionally, a contingent of 1,500 supporters, including members of the Unified Supporters Club and other stakeholders, is expected to arrive from Nigeria, armed with drums, horns, and other instruments to cheer the team to victory.
The Chairman of the Supporters Club, Vincent Okumagba, commended the efforts of National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade in organising support for the team.
Players and Coach Set for Battle
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, stating, “We have no other option than to get the three points here in Kigali. We are ready for whatever style of football our coach wants us to play.”
Head coach Eric Chelle, who took charge in January, has promised to reinstate the team’s attacking philosophy. “They need to play high-pressure football. The Super Eagles were my favourite team growing up. I want to be the best, and for that, we need to work harder. Time is not every coach’s friend, but if you accept the risk, you must take responsibility,” Chelle said.
Among the key players eager to make an impact is 23-year-old midfielder Papa Daniel Mustapha, who hopes to seize his opportunity on the big stage. The Niger Tornadoes star, a surprise inclusion in Chelle’s squad, remains optimistic. “We have everything—quality players. I just pray for luck. If I get a chance, I’ll be happy to show Nigeria and the world what I can do,” he said from the team’s camp at Radisson Blu, Kigali.
Lookman Stresses Importance of Teamwork
African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, has urged his teammates to approach Rwanda with the utmost seriousness. “We know Rwanda is a good team, but at the end of the day, we must focus on ourselves, impose our game, and fight for the win,” the Atalanta forward stated.
Lookman emphasised the quality within the Super Eagles squad, highlighting their strong bond as a crucial factor for success. “Everybody knows the level of players we have here. It’s an incredible group, but most importantly, they are good people. Everyone has the same objective—to win. That’s very important,” he added.
Following today’s encounter in Kigali, the Super Eagles will return to Nigeria to face Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo four days later. With their World Cup dreams hanging in the balance, these two matches are must-win fixtures for Nigeria.
